Mr. McKenna has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Washington Post’s “Lawyer of the Year” Award, “Washingtonian Magazine’s Man of the Year,” and Chief Justice Roberts selected him as one of four attorneys chosen to serve on an Ad Hoc Committee developing considerations for possible legislative enactments relating to medical malpractice litigation.

Mr. McKenna graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in History, and he received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was a Senior Editor of the Georgetown Law Journal and winner of the 1996 Rose Prize for Best Paper – Private International Law: Drafting Private International Treaties;

Drafting Dispute Resolution Clauses; and Franchising in International Commercial Arbitration.

Mr. McKenna has been recognized as a Georgetown Alumni of the Year and has taught courses at the Law Center, University of Virginia Law School, and George Mason University, receiving teaching excellence awards from all.

Mr. McKenna is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.

Following a motion for certification by Chief Justice Roberts, He was to practice before the United States Supreme Court.

Mr. McKenna is admitted to practice before the Federal District Courts for Washington D.C., U.S.

Robert L. McKenna III is the founder and former President of the Lippman Family Foundation, Marriott International’s Global Ambassador for Volunteerism.

He is also a founder of the Waking Up in America organization, which is dedicated to creating opportunities and mobilizing people in communities to improve their lives.

His Achievements

A former NFL player, Mr. McKenna played quarterback for the University of Miami and then in the Canadian Football League.

McKenna founded Professional Sports Athletes Outreach (PSAO) in 1989, which worked with professional football players to help get their message out about AIDS.

PSAO continued to work throughout his football career with the Washington Redskins and later with other NFL teams. Additionally, McKenna has been a member of Team USA for three consecutive Olympic Games.

In 1997, Mr. McKenna founded Waking Up in America, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for people and mobilizing them in communities to improve their lives by increasing education and skills development.

As President of Waking Up in America, Mr. McKenna initiated the “Football for Hope” program in 2009. All proceeds from the program go to benefit Special Olympics.

In 2010, he served on the President’s Advisory Committee for United Cerebral Palsy of North Carolina.

He led a team that helped design a supplemental service model called “Opening Doors,” which aims to increase the number of people with cerebral palsy who can attend college.

Mr. McKenna has inspired young people through his appearances on ESPN’s Sports Center and other athletic-related television shows as an advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and education; he is also one of 3 celebrity ambassadors for the Special Olympics World Games 2012 (San Antonio).

He is a member of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Board of Directors, an NCAA-licensed company and licensee for Little League Baseball.

McKenna was voted one of “Wake Up! Magazine”s 2005 Heroes, along with comedian Mike Epps, author Terrie Williams and his wife, Rita.
